American Civil War style officer sword knot, gold, with sliding keeper.
The purpose of sword knots was both decorative and practical: to secure the sabre to the wrist so a mounted soldier would not lose the sabre in battle. The design evolved from a simple cord to leather sword knots for enlisted men and wire bullion sword knots for officers.
