Description

Satirical 16th century playing cards

A replica of a satirical deck of cards by the German artist Peter Flötner ca 1540. It is decorated with traditional German suit signs and includes “unter” and “ober” figures rather than jacks and queens and no aces. 48 card decks were commonly used for a lower-class trick-taking game “Karnöffel”. It was a game played mostly by the lower classes and the naughty and satirical images on this deck probably reflect the game’s lower class origins.
