Bought from a British toy manufacturer shortly before June 6, 1944, this type of toy cricket was issued exclusively to soldiers in the 101st Airborne Division. It was used for rallying troops after the night jump into Normandy.

(from Collector’s Guide Vol II, Henri-Paul Enjames)

The paratroopers were free to hang their cricket wherever they wished. Some have kept it in the pockets of their jackets or their pants, other have hung it around the neck or on their helmet.
